Watch pro-shot footage of Metallica messing up, and then ripping through, ‘Phantom Lord’ at Florida throwback show

On November 6, Metallica played a special show at the 7,000-capacity Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, to honor the life and legacy of Megaforce Records founder Jon “Jonny Z” Zazula and his wife Marsha Zazula, who died in 2022 and 2021, respectively.

Megaforce launched Metallica’s career by releasing the band’s first two albums, 1983’s Kill ‘Em All and 1984’s Ride the Lightning, and in recognition of that early support, the band played a set devoted entirely to those two seminal records.

Among the many tracks they performed was the Kill ‘Em All classic, “Phantom Lord,” and now the band has offered up professionally-filmed footage of the song.

“The title of this song came from a band that I was in before Metallica,” James Hetfield announces from the stage. “It was a ‘pretend’ band. It was me and my buddy. You know how that goes.”

Metallica then proceed to tear into the tune… but not before messing up the intro. “It’s an eight-count!” Hetfield reminds his band mates
