It has been confirmed that a brand new biopic about iconic pop stars the Bee Gees has been announced. What’s more, is that the team behind Bohemian Rhapsody will be behind the wheel.
Deadline reports that Graham King, who took the helm of the acclaimed Freddie Mercury and Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody will be teaming up with Paramount Pictures and Sister to make the film.
The project is still very much in its embryonic stages without a cast or even a script, but the idea of chronicling the lives of the Brothers Gibb was too alluring for Paramount to refuse. The production company has bought the rights to the Bee Gees music from the Gibb Estate. That means the film will be littered with their hits.
The band began singing in the late ’50s and was comprised of brothers Maurice, Barry, and Robin. Their music was picked up by acclaimed Beatles manager Brian Epstein and they were quickly thrust into the limelight.
They hit the big time when they recorded the soundtrack to John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever. The soundtrack went 15x platinum and is often seen as the soundtrack to the Disco music movement. While details of the film remain scarce and those close to the project are keeping tightlipped, it has been confirmed that production company ‘Sister’ has been brought in to work alongside Paramount.
Having formed in 1958, The Bee Gees consisted of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb who went on to enjoy both critical and commercial success in the 1960s and early 1970s. While the band became one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, selling more than 220 million records worldwide, battles with drugs and alcohol forced them to split up in the mid-70s. “There was this deep, emotional competition between three brothers that had found themselves to be famous and didn’t understand it,” Barry Gibb told the Guardian in 2013.
It is not yet known whether or not the nee biopic will delver deeper into the personal lives of the band or, much like Bohemian Rhapsody, focus more on the music. While sadly on Robin Gibb survives the band, the announcement of a biopic about their journeyed story will give fans a reason to be excited.
