Focus Features have released the first official trailer for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
The upcoming film, set for release in cinemas on April 12th, stars Marisa Abela as Winehouse, charting the beginnings of her career, her meteoric rise to fame, and the creation of her seminal album, Back to Black.
Taylor-Johnson has previously said she is “excited and humbled” to have been given the opportunity to “realise Amy’s beautifully unique and tragic story to cinema”.
Following on from the previous teaser, the trailer moves with Winehouse through the early days to her meeting Blake Fielder-Civil, who is played by Jack O’Connell. Winehouse’s father, Mitch, is played by Eddie Marsan, and her mother, Janis, is played by Juliet Cowan.
The media fascination with Winehouse is nodded to as paparazzi consistently hound her in the new trailer. Additionally, some of her key musical influences, such as Sarah Vaughan and Lauryn Hill, are also mentioned.
Back To Black has been made with the support of The Amy Winehouse Estate, Sony Music Publishing, and Universal Music Group, allowing the biopic full access to her catalogue. Abela is shown singing ‘Rehab’ and ‘Back to Black’ in the first clip released.
Mark Ronson, who frequently collaborated with Winehouse, recently lent his support to the film after it received criticism on social media. “The only thing I know about the film is I know Sam [Taylor-Johnson] quite well. And I read the script, and I feel what it did really nicely was [that] I was reminded of [Winehouse’s] humour, and it really caught that well,” he remarked.
Ronson continued: “I think she just had this whip-smart razor sense of humour, which is one of her many gifts, and they got that very nice in the film.”
