I’ll never forget the time Slipknot scared the ever-living shit out of me. I was a young metal fan, just finding my way with the genre when I picked up Iowa. I’d played the hell out of the nontet’s debut album and was excited how these boys from Iowa were going to top that.
That day, I slapped the disc into my Sony Walkman, turned out the lights, and hit play. There in the dark, I heard Corey Taylor lose his entire mind on the tracks. I’d never heard anything like it and my Catholic background resulted in me thinking one thing — this band was demonic and I was going to Hell for listening. What a sweet summer child I was.
So you can imagine the wave of nostalgia that hit me when this video of Taylor laying down some vocals for Iowa on March 10, 2001 hit the internet today. It’s just so raw sounding. The dude is willing to completely blow out his vocal chords at that moment for the benefit of the track.
Naturally, that was 21 years ago and Corey Taylor is an older, sober version of himself. And it’s a good thing he didn’t destroy his vocal chords — otherwise, how would we ever know what he’s thinking at any given moment?! I’d be out of a job!
Anyway, I know Slipknot isn’t brvtal or kvlt for most of you, but this shit is a cool look into the recording process for a killer album. So if you can put aside your corpse paint and church burning kit for a moment, check the video out below.
