Ridley Scott lined up to direct Bee Gees biopic

Golden Globe-winning director Ridley Scott in negotiations with Paramount Pictures to direct an upcoming biopic on The Bee Gees.

The film was first announced back in 2019 and has since cycled through various directors and production staff. Originally, the untitled Bee Gees project was set to be directed by Kenneth Branagh, with Ben Elton taking up scriptwriting responsibilities.

Now, the biopic has taken a new twist, with the Blade Runner director set to take the reigns on the upcoming biopic, exploring the rise of the Gibb brothers.

Branagh previously left the project shortly after the initial announcement to be replaced by John Carney and later Lorene Scafaria. Scott will now take the helm, co-producing the film alongside Graham King, Stacey Snider and Michael Pruss in addition to directing.

John Logan, who previously wrote Scott’s 2000 masterpiece Gladiator, will be brought on board to write the script for the film.

As yet untitled, the film will tell the story of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, who found fame as Bee Gees during the disco boom of the 1970s. Barry Gibb, the last surviving member of the group, will be brought on board to executive produce the biopic.

No release date, cast, or title has been announced for the project as of yet, but more details are expected in due course. When the film does eventually arrive, it will fall within a growing trend of musical biopics, following the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, and the upcoming Amy Winehouse film Back to Black.

Scott’s next project is Gladiator 2, starring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn. The long-awaited movie is set to be released in cinemas on November 22nd, 2024.
