Live albums are intended to give listeners an experience they can’t get from a traditional studio recording. Many factors could contribute to this, whether it includes unreleased songs, they are played in a specific way, or features never before heard covers. In the case of Paul McCartney, and Wings with their legendary (as yet unreleased) album One Hand Clapping, fans will receive all three.
In 1974, Wings was enjoying commercial success as Band on the Run was revelling in a seven-week stint at the top of the charts. They were one of the biggest musical outfits in the world. As such, when they headed to Abbey Road Studios to film a video documentary and possible live studio albums, fans waited with bated breath.
However, the album never came out. Nevertheless, the material that was filmed and recorded over a few days and featured a number of different songs made its way to the screen but never to the airwaves. Thanks to the quality of the music on offer, various iterations of performances have been bootlegged for decades in lieu of an official release, but now, fans have the chance to experience the real thing.
Paul McCartney and Wings have now officially announced that on June 14th, they will release the One Hand Clapping album. This comes with the original artwork designed for the project, a TV sales brochure for the unreleased film at the time, audio from songs featured in the documentary and a collection of tracks that were filmed off-camera that have never officially been issued.
The recording of these songs showcased a pivotal moment for the band as they were brandishing a brand new line-up fresh from Nashville. Danny Seiwell and Henry McCullough had left the band prior to recording Band on the Run. Therefore, Paul, Linda and Denny Laine were now joined by guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Geoff Britton.
One Hand Clapping promises to celebrate a barrage of live songs that will give listeners insight into elements of Wings that have previously been unheard. Beginning with a jam that eventually became the One Hand Clapping theme song consisting of covers of ‘Blackbird’, ‘Twenty Flight Rock’ and ‘Peggy Sue’, and an unreleased song called ‘Blackpool’, there is enough content on this album to give listeners a new look at their favourite band.
The album will be available in multiple formats, including a double LP and 7” package available an exclusive vinyl.
