Hulu and Disney+ have announced a new documentary that will follow Bruce Springsteen on tour, titled Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
According to an official summary, the film will offer “the most in-depth look ever at the creation of their legendary live performances”. It hopes to provide fans with a glimpse at Springsteen and the E Street Band backstage on their ongoing world tour, with clips of conversations and practices from behind the scenes. The documentary will focus specifically on Springsteen’s setlist curation.
Springsteen’s frequent collaborator Thom Zimny has directed the documentary. Zimny previously helmed Springsteen on Broadway, which documented the singer-songwriter’s residencies in the famous New York City area. He also co-directed an accompanying film for Springsteen’s 2019 album, Western Stars.
Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their world tour in February 2023 with a run of shows in Florida. Since then, they have taken to stages across Europe and North America, most recently playing a string of shows in Ireland. The tour is set to come to an end in Canada in November, a month after the launch of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.
Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band isn’t the only forthcoming film that Springsteen fans have to look forward to. Deliver Me From Nowhere, a biopic about ‘The Boss’, is also in the works. Director Scott Cooper is set to helm the project. His previous credits include Crazy Heart and Antlers.
Rather than looking at Springsteen’s celebrated live set, the biographical film will focus on the making of his 1982 album, Nebraska. The record was a landmark in his discography, a collection of sonic stories that contained all of Springsteen’s growing anxieties. Even The Boss himself considers Nebraska to be the album that represents him best.
After finding success with a starring role in HBO’s beloved drama series The Bear, Jeremy Allen White is set to star in the biopic, taking on the role of Springsteen. Former Succession star Jeremy Strong is also in talks to join the project in the role of producer and manager Jon Landau.
A timeline for Deliver Me From Nowhere is yet to be revealed, but the live documentary, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, has been set for release later this year in October. A definite release date has not been confirmed.
